 Discover Ensenada

Discover the beauty and charm of this coastal Mexican gem. Nestled along the stunning coastline of Baja California, la “Cenicienta del PacĂfico” (“the Cinderella of the Pacific”), Ensenada enchants visitors with its breathtaking desert and ocean landscapes, picturesque vineyards, and world-famous cuisine. Explore the charming streets of colorful buildings and the lively atmosphere of the local markets. Indulge in fresh seafood delights at the bustling fish market or savor authentic tacos at roadside stands. Stay a few days longer and take advantage of the surfing, snorkeling, or whale watching in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Calm and family-friendly, Ensenada is considered a safe area of Mexico, with many tourists visiting and residing here. Despite this, we take extensive safety measures and work closely with our Ensenada-based partners to plan and carry out our educational and cultural activities with safety in mind. Host families are affiliated with the university and thoroughly vetted, and our group is always accompanied by program staff, as our participants’ safety and well-being is always our top priority.

Testimonials
“This was an unforgettable experience that I’ll carry with me forever… it gave me a deep and meaningful connection to my culture, a reminder of the beauty and diversity within Mexico that I hadn’t fully experienced before.
The specialized academic classes in medicine and bioengineering were truly eye-opening, and not only prepared me academically but also helped me better visualize what I might encounter in my future coursework and career. The professors and director explained everything so clearly and passionately it opened my eyes to how exciting both fields are. Their knowledge and energy made a lasting impression on me.
My homestay experience was another highlight. I stayed with an incredibly kind and welcoming host who made my time in Ensenada even more special. She helped me explore the city, introduced me to new people, and made me feel at home. Because of her, I’m eager to return and grateful for the friendships and memories I made there. The program was well coordinated: communication was timely, logistics were smooth, and transportation was not just reliable but fun, our driver had such a great personality that riding with him became part of the adventure.
This program helped me grow academically, culturally, and personally. It strengthened my confidence in my career path and was a life-changing experience that I will always hold close to my heart.”
“Dr. Ortiz’s class is one of the most engaging and practical language classes I’ve ever taken. We would learn something and then immediately put it into practice. Out in the communities with Dra. Ponce and the mentors, it was impactful to apply the health questionnaire in a real-world setting. Practicing those skills in the field reinforced everything we’d been working on. The hospital shadowing with Dra. Maricela was incredibly informative, and fascinating to see how the hospital is structured compared to those back home.
Mari made us feel right at home. She was happy to show us around, and it was so fun to go out with her and the group. It made the experience feel personal and connected beyond just staying in her home. The food was amazing—she took into account our preferences and made sure we enjoyed every meal.Â
The cultural activities were well-integrated, each added something meaningful and fun. It was awesome to create something during the ceviche-making class. Visiting Mercado Negro and Tres Cabezas gave us a feel for the local food scene, history, and was great for souvenir shopping. The lunches in the cafeteria were amazing, a delicious way to experience local cuisine. And the little moments like grabbing elote on the side of the road felt so authentic and special. The warm welcome we received showed how many people came together for this program. I feel incredibly lucky to have learned from and connected with such passionate mentors, faculty, and peers and hope to visit again soon!
“I’m not interested in being a tourist, I prefer deep experiences in non-touristy places with the locals. This is one reason I love this immersion program. It was the highlight of my year, took me outside of my comfort zone and taught me a lot about caring for my patients and about cultural humility.
For instance, providers often believe cultural foods are not healthy, but I’ve eaten healthily every day here and can easily recommend to patients the traditional foods they consume. I learned the [clinical] approach prioritizes humility, and the social history questionnaire is longer – type of house, running water, basic amenities, etc. The questions are phrased in a judgement-free, open-ended manner.
I looked forward to lunch everyday. It was delicious and they considered our dietary restrictions. Almost every day I ate something new (molletes, nopales, Mexican candy). One night we had real Oaxacan hot chocolate. I told Abuelita that we make a version with NestlĂ© condensed milk and she actually went to purchase some for me. The closing bonfire was a lovely… we read letters to our host families and there were tears. (Mine felt like I had known them for years). It was a night of conversation, dolphin watching, marshmallow roasting, a beautiful end to a beautiful experience. I can’t believe I’m listening to Spanish all day and understanding/retaining the material. I prayed for something like this and then worked for it. One of the best experiences of this year by far.

How do travel and accommodations logistics work?
The group will meet mid-morning on the first day of the trip at the San Diego, California – México border (U.S. side, so you will not have to cross alone). There, program and university staff will accompany students while crossing the border, and as a group we will drive down together to Universidad Xochicalco’s Ensenada campus in our trusty “Xochi Vans” (official university transport) and start the adventure!
During the trip, transportation to and from campus, host family homes, and excursions and sites around the city will continue to be provided through the Xochi Vans, driven by our vetted drivers (and in some cases, our host families). On the last day of the trip, we will travel back to the border in the Xochi van, and staff will guide students back into the U.S. Those who choose to extend their stay will also be accompanied to and through the border on their last day.
As for accommodations, our participants stay primarily with host families, typically families affiliated with Universidad Xochicalco. We share program guidelines and safety protocols with the families of interested students, faculty, staff, and community members, and those who wish to move forward fill out a survey designed to ensure that each family as well as their homes and neighborhoods meet our safety and lodging standards. This leads to a multi-step vetting process including home visits and interviews to ensure a good fit for both the family and participating student, and the final step includes a commitment to hospitably welcoming our participants throughout the length of their stay and attending a thorough training for host families prior to the program.
We encourage this option for the full immersion experience, but can also offer on-campus dorm accommodations. These are limited and first-come, first-served, so if you prefer to stay on-campus (or with your partner, friend, family member or other participant), make sure to register early and let us know your preference upon registration so we can make the proper arrangements.
What is a typical day like?
Your schedule during the weekday will start off by fueling up for a busy day through breakfast with your host family (or in the cafeteria, if you stay on campus) before you’re dropped off on campus for the day. A typical day incorporates two hours daily of Spanish Language class, which focuses on overall fluency, syntax, vocabulary through oral and written comprehension and expression, while weaving in aspects of Mexican culture, society, geography, history, archeology, and gastronomy of Baja California as well as other Mexican regions, such as Mexico City, Yucatán and Oaxaca. In the last portion of class, you’ll be grouped with your peer mentors (Xochicalco students) to practice what you’ve learned – a method that helps with retention and fluency while providing you with real-time feedback, tips and new phrases, and stimulating discussions with native speakers.
Most days will also include between 1-2 two-hour long Medical Spanish lessons. The first portion is similarly lecture-based, though with plenty of student participation and using the medical school’s facilities and technology, such as the simulation labs, high-fidelity patient simulators, and Anatomage table. During the practice segment, you’ll have dedicated time and faculty & mentor support to clarify any questions regarding both the content and terminology of that day’s lesson.
In the early afternoon, a traditional and delicious Mexican lunch (including options for those with dietary restrictions and allergens) will be waiting for you, and you’ll end with a break to rest, recuperate and decompress. Beyond the classroom, most days will incorporate either a clinical or cultural activity, alternating shadowing at local clinics, hospitals, and community health brigades with cultural workshops.
Most evenings, you will have dinner with your host family, with a few optional group evening outings which might include sipping on drinks and enjoying ceviche, tacos or churros out on the town, or a museum, boutique or bookstore visit if that is more your speed. Other possible cultural immersion activities include an interactive cooking lesson at the campus Gastronomy lab, dance and arts classes (painting, weaving or other artesanĂas), a scavenger hunt which doubles as real-world Spanish practice with local merchants, a festive fiesta with LoterĂa and piñatas, a visit to the local Kumiai indigenous community, or a beach bonfire with bonbones, surrounded by the light and warmth of the fire, as well as new friends, music, games, stories and community bonding.
Group excursions are typically held on Saturdays: you’ll explore more of Ensenada, such as the historic cultural district and downtown, open-air food and artisan markets with our vibrant binational cohort. Wine lovers can register for wine-growing tours and tastings at the world-famous Valle de Guadalupe vineyards (optional, with an additional cost). Sunday will be a day to spend with host families – they will typically take you to their favorite local spots, but if there is anywhere you wish to see or anything in particular you’d like to check off your Ensenada bucket list, make sure to let us know
